[When Sirius gets back...

Well, he owes it to James, to go and see him. Right? A written out message would hardly suffice; a conversation over these devices would seem stupid and cowardly--would be stupid and cowardly, really, and Sirius is not a coward. Not even when it comes to facing down the reality of a future he would rather not face, not even when it comes to thinking about a world without James. It was never easy, but when James wasn't here, he could at least put it out of his mind. He missed James already, being aboard this ship--knowing the future only meant that he missed him more in advance--

But now James is here, and the future that Harry has told them about seems disturbingly close. It's only a few years, isn't it? Somehow in a few years, James and Lily will be married and dead, and Sirius will be in Azkaban, and Peter will have betrayed them and Remus will be alone, thinking half his friends dead and believing the worst of Sirius--

It makes him want to vomit just thinking about it, an instinct that he suppresses by getting angry, by lashing out at whatever happens to be at hand. And James knows now, and Sirius has to go and see him, because he's James' best mate, because he owes it to him, because he has to explain why he didn't tell James.

He could put it off, but he doesn't; he goes straight to James' room (a path he's already memorised), and he knocks. It feels weirdly formal, he ought to just go in, right--but he waits, a muscle working in his jaw and his hands shoved into his pockets. If he looks grim, it's only because he's trying to, so nothing else bleeds through.]

[ The last couple of days have been somewhat of a blur. He remembers the talk with Remus - heading to his room hurt, angry, wanting to get the truth and then to leave and maybe let it stir a bit. Stir enough that he might actually react. But then it all goes downhill, and when James tries to leave Remus stops him, gets him to stay, makes him move past it and move on (temporarily, at least). James remembers talking to Harry - talking about Quidditch for Merlin's sake - and seeing Lily and it's all just one event after the next. One foot in front of the other. It hasn't sunk in because James doesn't give it the time, holds up is head and sets his jaw and laughs to make everyone else feel calmer. Better. Remus had said something about wanting it to be normal. Wanting to just hang around and act like they're back at home for a little bit, and for that reason, James plays the part.

He walks the gardens and the halls, talks to people and learns and keeps himself distracted. It's easier that way.

Sirius had gone off with a friend, gone exploring Remus had said, and James. James might have been a little jealous if he wasn't busy dealing with the other list of emotions - anger, fear, pain, it's his fault and everyone dies and it's ridiculous. All of it ridiculous. But it's not because Harry is proof of it all. He'd feel jealous if he wasn't trying to hide the rest of them, leaving no room for an actual reaction when he's too busy juggling the others.

So James keeps himself distracted until he's too tired to do that anymore, and then he heads to his room. Thinks that since he's been the one reaching out - texting Lily and Harry and going to Remus and Sirius' room, actively seeking out others because he didn't want to be alone - if he's the one to walk off, they won't follow. He doesn't even know Sirius is back, doesn't know if Remus texted him or told him or if he even knew at all. He's thought about what he'll say to his best mate when he sees him next, but hasn't decided on how to do it. There are thoughts, but no plans. Planning alone has never been much of his strong suit.

But then there's a knock, and James has lost track of how long he's been in there - sitting on the floor next to his bed, face in his hands - and for a moment James just stares. Few people know where his room is, or have been there, and even fewer would knock. Fewer to the point that James honestly doesn't know who would be standing on the other side when he goes to answer, because Remus and Lily and Harry would have at least told him they were coming. It's that lack of knowing that is why he freezes up as soon as the door's open, as soon as he realizes it's Sirius standing there. His first thought is why did you knock but his second is oh. Oh, because he must know. Must know James knows, and his confused look drops into something a little darker as he stands there, right inside the door. ]

[It's stupid, to send this. It's stupid to write when it doesn't matter, when he's looked and looked and now he can't look any longer, there's nowhere else to look, and all he can do is sort of-- distract himself, to keep from going mental. And he still looks, anyways, he still goes off--sometimes with Remus, sometimes without him--and walks the corridors, even going to the more dangerous bits of the ship, the bits where it's dark.

But he'd know if James were gone. He'd just know. It sounds weird, but he would, and he holds to that, because he hasn't got anything else, and he avoids Lily, and Harry--Merlin, especially Harry--and he purposefully doesn't bring it up with Remus, because-- he doesn't get scared. This isn't scared. This is nothing at all, and that's worse.

And all of that translates into a single line:]

he jumps a little when the door opens, but when he sees Remus walk through he can't say he's surprised. instead he just sits up on his bed, tosses the device off a little ways away and tries to laugh. tries, but it doesn't really work, and instead he ends up running his fingers through his hair. ]

[James is probably right where Sirius left him: in the room he shares with Remus (still shares with Remus, no matter when Remus is from or what he's forgotten). Obviously losing Lily has been hard on him, and Peter as well, and the confusing return (?) of Remus only adds to that, leaving James-- not himself. Which worries Sirius, which he covers up for by being louder than usual, and being Padfoot half the time, draping himself on James and doing tricks and so on and so forth--

But other, more drastic action might prove to be necessary here.]
